Translucent Megadoor at Pendennis shipyard dry dock

ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems’ Megadoor translucent fabric door help Pendennis shipyard improve operations, do more business and save on energy costs.

About the customer

The Pendennis Falmouth shipyard is one of the world's leading custom superyacht build and refit facilities. They employ over 350 staff and have 25 years in business. In 2013 they initiated a substantial expansion of their facilities in Falmouth. Expansion of the dry dock was necessary to achieve maximum flexibility and ease of operation, and to accommodate the business of building larger superyachts. As the existing doors were rusting and very difficult to open, Pendannis required the site operational as quickly as possible.

Entrance solution challenges

The existing doors were difficult to open due to corrosion, rust and clogged floor tracks. The doors also restricted the opening. Pendennis needed an entrance solution that was easy to operate and had a maximum-width clear opening that would resist high winds. They wanted to make use of natural light and reduce both energy costs and their carbon footprint. In addition they wanted to make use of their waterfront location to increase its brand recognition.

Delivered entrance solution

ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems delivered a Megadoor project door designed to withstand winds of over 100 mph. The new door is very easy to operate and its translucent fabric has increased the natural light into the building, reducing energy costs and enhancing working conditions. The door gives a clear opening to the full width of the dock and has no floor tracks. To support the Pendannis brand, a logo sized 20 meters x 8 meters is placed right on the door fabric, allowing anyone entering the Falmouth harbor to see it.
